new YORK (Reuters Health) – more than 26,000 children and
teenagers are injured each year in farms of States
United, which equates to a cost of 1.4 billion health of
dollars, according to a study published in Pediatrics.
Less than a third of the accidents were labour; 84
were fatal. The estimate, the first on the amount of
injuries children’s fatal and non-fatal associated with life
of American farm, was carried out with the results of the
surveys 2001-2006 of paediatric injuries in the field.
Fatal injuries accounted for about 420 million of
dollars, including lost wages and the value of pain and
suffering.
“The cost of Pediatric injuries in the field is huge
“
and compared to the costs of the risks, as the
unintentional child poisoning or work-related injuries
“
with needles”, reported the team of Eduard Zaloshnja, of the
Pacific Institute for research and evaluation in
Beltsville, Maryland.
In 2001, 1.1 million children and adolescents States
United lived on farms. 14 Percent of injuries
needed hospitalization, compared with 1.4 per cent of the
Pediatric injuries in the country.
“Injuries at work in the field tend to be more
“”
serious injuries in other populations than”, said Dennis J..
Murphy, expert on agricultural work safety of
Pennsylvania State University, University Park, and not
participated in the study.
“Are common due to the equipment that is used and
“”
can easily cause tears”, pointed out.
The study shows that the fatal injuries occurred
mainly by the use of machinery, fire and explosions.
Falls and transport were the most common causes of
non-fatal injuries.
“Farms, children are exposed to many
“
dangers, but also to many good things. “They learn the
culture of work and responsibility”, said Murphy.
Felt that parents should pay more attention to the
safety of their children on farms and not let them handle
teams or tasks for which they are not prepared.
“The majority of parents almost always sobreestiman the
“
skills of their children in the tasks. “Children should not
hurry up in wanting to do work of adults, and operate a
tractor or other equipment”, he added.
The estimates were at $ 2005, excluding the
costs of the work of the police or firefighters, or damage to the
property or psychological assistance after a crash.
