Spanish hospitals would save about 178,8 million euros annually with a control second to second their energy consumption, which is 25 percent of the energy demand of the more de160.000 hospital beds in all regions, according to the estimates made by the Group consultant engineering and energy efficiency Euroconsult from the data of the National system of health ( SNS).

Currently, hospitals consumed 2 percent of energy in Spain taking into account their spending of light, water and gas. According to the consultant, on average, annual consumption of each hospital bed also 29.199 kWh, representing an approximate expenditure of 4,467 euros a year by reference to an average cost of 15 cents of euro for each kWh

The most substantial savings occur in communities with a greater volume of hospital beds. The head would be Catalonia, 37.7 million euros of savings each year, followed by Andalusia (24.5 million), Madrid (23.9), Comunidad Valenciana (15.9), Galicia (11.6) and Castilla y León (10.6).

With considerable savings, although below the ten million a year, they would find Basque country (9.3), Canary (8.6), Castile – La Mancha (6.6), Aragon (6.1), Murcia (5.1), Asturias (4.7), Extremadura (4.6), Baleares (3,5), Navarre (2.7), Cantabria (2.4) and La Rioja (one million).

Responsible for iGreen and energy management of Euroconsult, Carlos Sáez, stresses that, “Unlike or after cost-saving measures, such as the use of efficient lighting systems, replacement of boilers of diesel oil by natural gas or the implementation of systems of electrical cogeneration, management in real time of consumption ite considerable savings at a considerably lower cost””, that the initial investment could pay off in less than a year”.

However, they emphasize that there are differences in the type and dimension of hospitals among different communities, a sliding scale depending on the installed beds shows that most large hospitals, over thousand beds, but it is estimated that they could save more than 1.1 million euros per year.

For his part, those of mid-size – between 250 and 1,000 seats – would reduce its spending on about 700,000 euros a year, while the centres with lower capacity could save up to 300,000 euros.
