Buenos Aires, 30 mar (EFE).-Argentina shall preside over the next two years the Regional Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Organization for agriculture and food (FAO) confirmed today EfE sources of the organization.
The choice of Argentina to chair the regional conference was announced by the director-general of FAO, José Graziano Da Silva, in the framework of a meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of Latin America and the Caribbean, which concludes today in Buenos Aires.
The meeting, involving the last representatives of 32 countries in the region Monday, addresses the main challenges of the international food and agricultural agenda and aims to set the priorities that will continue to FAO during the next two years.
“We know that food security depends on actions in the field of social, economic and productive, and we also know that it involves political commitment not only of a Government but an entire society,” said Thursday Graziano da Silva.
The director of the FAO stressed the “need to increase global food production by 70 per cent to feed a population that will reach 9 billion people in 2050”.
La Latin America initiative and the Caribbean without hunger, driven in 2005 by Brazil and Guatemala in the field of FAO, is a planned for before 2025 goal, as he recalled Graziano da Silva. EFE
