Madrid, February 2013- epidemiologist Dr. LAIA Alemany unit infections and Cancer of the Catalan Institute of Oncology has offered a lecture to students in the fourth edition of Master in advanced technological applications in radiation oncology, during teaching sessions which are held on a fortnightly basis, in which specialists in different types of tumors. These sessions are invited renowned national and international experts as speakers in the conferences included in the theoretical block of this postgraduate course organized by the IMO Group Foundation and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia in collaboration with the FFIS.
Dr. Alemany clarified that human papillomavirus (HPV) virus is necessary but not cause of cervical cancer ”. That is to say that in all cases of cervical cancer HPV is, but it is important to remember that not all people who are infected with the virus will develop cancer. In that sense, the epidemiologist of the ICO said that most women will have contact with the virus ever throughout his life but most of them will it eliminate the infection spontaneously, and in a small percentage will persist and could evolve to pre-cancerous lesions and cancer ”.
According to cancer registries about 2,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed and about 700 annual deaths from cervical cancer occur in our country.
During his speech, epidemiologist undertook a review of the burden of disease caused by HPV, the natural history of infection and disease, and the advances in terms of different preventive strategies are available. He also pointed out that infections and Cancer of the Catalan Institute of Oncology Unit currently is investigating the causal relationship and the etiologic fraction of HPV cancers in other locations of the body, such as cancers of the year, vagina, vulva, penis and head and neck, particularly of the oropharynx.

Finally Dr. Alemany emphasized the importance of prevention. current strategies to prevent cervical cancer are diverse and are directed both to prevent infection by the virus (considered to be primary prevention), thanks to the development of prophylactic vaccines, how in the early detection of pre-cancerous lesions (secondary prevention), through conventional cytology as well as the detection of HPV diagnostic ”.
On the graduate
In November 2012, nine students began the fourth edition of the Master in advanced technological applications in radiation oncology, a postgraduate course organized by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia, the Foundation for training and health research in the Region of Murcia (FFIS) and the Foundation group IMO. This ambitious educational project has placed to Spain, and in particular the Region of Murcia, as a benchmark in radiation oncology. In the first three editions, 36 students from 16 different countries have studied this postgraduate course.
