Dusambe, 7 sep (EFE).-the Office of the World Health Organization (who) in Tajikistan today announced that from September 1, 2010 there have been new cases of polio in Europe or Central Asia.

According to the Ministry of health of Tajikistan, of the 438 cases of polio recorded in the first half of 2010, 21 people were killed.

Previously, neighbouring Russia had to impose the embargo on imports of fruit from Tajikistan because of the danger posed by the outbreak infecting.

Tajikistan vaccinated nearly a million children last may, whereas last year they were vaccinated a total of 2.7 million children and adolescents.

“It is necessary that Europe does not lose the caution to follow as a polio-free region,” added the statement.

Who launched a worldwide campaign for the eradication of polio which was intended to put an end to the disease by the year 2000, objective that has yet to be attained in 1988.EFE
