Buenos Aires, 8 sep (EFE).-the school is one of the main spaces that make use of Argentine teenagers when looking for information on sexuality, according to a study conducted by Unicef and the Fundación Huésped disclosed today.
Family and friends are also positioned as the main sources of information for young people to obtain data on sexual and reproductive health, followed by doctors, media and Internet, argues the report.
According to work, access and consumption of media and the information technologies in adolescents “is widespread”, but “the parents and the school are more reliable, accessible and understandable to resolve their queries” on sexuality
“Responses from the kids show clearly that the school is a privileged place to open spaces for dialogue with adolescents on topics as sensitive as sexuality,” said Unicef representative Argentina, Andrés Franco, during the presentation of the study in Buenos Aires
The specialist assessed the implementation of the law on sex education in schools in the country to allow “level knowledge” in the subject and “work in prevention”.
“The biggest challenge is linked to sexual and reproductive health promotion campaigns conducted through the media to achieve confidence and clarity needed to address adolescents”, felt the President of the Fundación Huésped and extitular of the society international of AIDS, Pedro Cahn.
The study, based on more than a thousand interviews with young people aged between 14 and 19 years in different parts of the country, also revealed that 97 percent of respondents know some method of contraception and 74 per cent said it obtained information on STDs in the College.
Including AIDS is the best known, he said the study, he also noted that 80 percent of respondents did not make any medical consultation on contraception or sexually transmitted infections in the past year. EFE
