Madrid, 2011-September Reputados experts in Alzheimer disease (ad) and other dementias makes public the Mallorca manifesto, a declaration of intent which reflects the views of various professionals who work in tackling this disease, on how should organize the healthcare network to people with dementia, from early diagnosis to assistance in decision making at the end of life. The paper began to be developed within the framework of the 16th course national Alzheimer’s disease (CNEA), sponsored by Grünenthal Foundation and held in Palma de Mallorca last February, and whose content was made public on the occasion of the celebration of the day world of Alzheimer’s disease.
In this course it brought together a group of experts with the aim of establishing an interdisciplinary dialogue to address the situation of assistance to those suffering from EA and other dementias, and members of their families. The proposed starting point was the discussion on the need to organize assistance to cognitive impairment and dementia through the formation of interdisciplinary units, and that according to this group of experts should be composed of professionals in primary care, Neurology, Neuropsychology, geriatrics, psychiatryNeuroradiologÃa-Nuclear Medicine, biochemistry, rehabilitation, nursing and Social worker. These units allow the optimization of the resources available and the incorporation of new tools for diagnosis and treatment ”, as specified in this document. Also reflected that should promote a change in the attitude of society from ad and other dementias, change current, for the commitment and the accompaniment of the patient and his family fear and rejection-oriented ”.
In view of this group of experts, is a priority for health authorities to establish a National Plan for the integrated care of the cognitive impairment and dementia, to improve the efficiency of the resources available at present, allows early diagnosis and optimize support health partner to the sick and their families. This will allow the best possible support at the present time, as well as advancing the knowledge of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to finally allow us to deal with this important disease with guarantees ”, as reflected in this document.
Manifesto MALLORCA
Within the framework of the 16th national course of Alzheimer’s disease, held in Palma de Mallorca in February 2011, met a group of experts in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue. The discussion addressed the current situation of dementia care, with special mention of the possible ways of organizing it to patients and their families. The proposed starting point was the discussion on the necessity of units of dementia, its structure and its objectives. The conclusions of this meeting can be summarized in the following:

-the prevalence of dementia is very high and has characteristic epidemic.
-It is important to make early diagnosis of the disease.
-That the spectrum of clinical manifestations of dementia is broad and makes care needs change according to the stadium and the type of dementia.
-Currently not be available treatment that can modify the inexorable trend towards severe dementia.
– Cognitive impairment and dementia generate a high demand for direct health care in the areas of primary care, specialized care and resources partner health.
-That it is currently the family who bears the greater burden in caring for the sick.
-The classic care model of evaluation in primary and specialized care, does not meet the needs of the patient and his family.

-the need to organize assistance to cognitive impairment and dementia through the training of units interdisciplinary.
-That these units must have equipment diagnosis and comprehensive follow-up of the patient and his family-oriented. They shall also include professionals in primary care, Neurology, Neuropsychology, geriatrics, psychiatry, Nuclear Neuroradiology-medicine, rehabilitation, nursing and Social work.
-That the objectives of these units must be:
-precise identification of the clÃnica-biológica situation – social ill.
-the diagnosis of disease or diseases responsible for.
-establish a therapeutic plan that includes pharmacological treatment, non-pharmacological and social intervention relevant.
-establish a plan of monitoring that allows to adjust the therapeutic plan developments observed.
-evaluate the burden of non-professional caregiver of the patient and establish a plan of support.
-assess the level of knowledge they have relatives of this pathology to be able to form the family in dementia, as well as offer training focused on concrete and specific skills enabling them to deal with competition, to the difficulties cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social that they can appear during the process.
-That the assistance should include all stages of the disease, cognitive impairment without dementia dementia until serious.
-That these cognitive impairment and dementia units allow the optimization of the resources available and the incorporation of new tools for diagnosis and treatment.
-Which is important to the functional concept of the unit rather than structural. It is necessary dementia units forming part of a health care network to dementia.
-Which should promote a change in the attitude of society from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, oriented to change current, by the commitment and the accompaniment of the patient and his family. fear and rejection
Therefore
believe priority health authorities set up a National Plan for the integrated care of the cognitive deterioration and dementias, to improve the efficiency of the resources available at present, allow early diagnosis and it optimizes support public health to the sick and their families. This will allow the best possible support at the present time, as well as advancing the knowledge of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools that finally allow us to tackle the important task of defeat this terrible disease reliably.
