MADRID (Reuters) – Spain, a world leader in organ transplantation, broke a new record after record 94 interventions within 72 hours, according to the national organization of transplant (ONT).
The 23, 24 and 25 November 39 donors gave their bodies to benefit 91 receptors, two of whom were in “urgent zero”, which means that they would have died if they had not received the body in 24-48 hours.
39 Donor, two were foreigners and only two others had died in accidents in transit.
94 Transplantation, 48 were kidney, eight lung, six heart, three 23 of liver, pancreas and intestines.
Nearly 1,000 people and several private and public agencies including 42 hospitals, 10 airports, services for emergencies and civil protection of the autonomous communities involved, with the collaboration of the major air State participated in this marathon process.
The previous record of activity of the ONT was established on 29 March 2009, when carried out 32 transplants in 24 hours.
Spain was declared a world leader in organ donation and transplantation in 2010 for the 19th consecutive year, with a rate of 32 donors for million inhabitants and the realization of a total of 1.502 transplants year past.
