Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda provides training to all parents of infants born in Centre

Center was accredited by UNICEF as Hospital IMO friend of children ” the month of March.

-the school for parents offers theoretical-practical courses in 14 hours, in sessions of 2 hours a week

-its objective is guide, inform and form as well as to create an atmosphere of confidence among parents and professionals

Spain, January 2012.- the school for parents in the Hospital Puerta de Hierro – Majadahonda, belonging to the public network of the community of MadridThis new course offer training to all parents of children born in hospital following an initiative of the Pediatrics Neonatology unit. Until now this activity was directed at parents of children requiring admission to the neonatal unit. Since the launching of the school, at the beginning of 2010, more than 200 parents have participated in courses.

The objective is to provide parents guidance, information and training necessary to be able to carry out the best care for their children, as well as create a suitable environment in which parents are invited to participate and share their experiences, feelings, concerns and achievements, providing support and assistance at every moment.

The parents school counts with the participation of a multidisciplinary team comprising medical neonatologists, a child psychiatrist, nurses and assistants of Neonatology, social workers and members of the Association of parents of preterm children (APREM).

The training offered by the school consists of seven sessions teóricoprácticas, for two hours each, taught at the hospital, and that includes items about the link with the premature baby and the Kangaroo method; breastfeeding mother and artificial, as well as extraction and preservation of the milk.

Other themes include hygiene and infant massage; hospital discharge and returning home; and the approach of the most common infections, as well as the choking and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in infants. The course is completed with a module of caring for the caregiver, which includes a workshop of relaxation, and general care of the child in the hospital and at home.

Humanization of care

The school for parents is part of the policy of humanization of care developed by the service of Pediatrics of the Hospital Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda, which includes, among other actions, the statement by UNICEF as Hospital IMO – initiative for the humanization of assistance at birth and lactation-, known as children’s friend ”, and the nature of open-door hospital.

Obstetrics and paediatrics services were incorporated into the Centre on the occasion of the transfer of the Hospital Puerta de Hierro to its new location in Majadahonda. Since then his activity has grown steadily, and thus, this year will end with a forecast of more than 3,000 births, of which 10 percent corresponds to preterm infants. Also, the Neonatology unit closed 2011 with over 400 income.

The Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda serves an estimated population of 550,000 citizens, mostly in the Northwest of the region. available for this purpose a team of over 3,000 professionals that allow you to offer 40 surgical specialties.

As for infrastructure, it has 613 beds for hospitalization, all in single rooms. The Centre completed 2011 with an estimated activity of 25,700 income, 530,000 consultations, 132,000 emergency and 24,000 interventions surgical.
