International experts addressed the importance of the prevention of stroke in the clinical ischemic.
Fernández-Lasquetty opened the international meeting Neuro Interventional Radiology Master Course.
-the placement of stent in extra and intracranial vessels, good alternative to surgery
-Stroke is the leading cause of death in women and the second in the general population
Madrid, January 2012.- the importance of the prevention of ischemic stroke using advances in diagnostic imaging and endovascular treatment of the ateromatosis that affects the brain arteries, and the carotidIt is the central theme of the international course of Neuroradiology interventionist inaugurated by the Director of sanitation Javier Fernández-Lasquetty at the Hospital ClÃnico San Carlos.
Leading international experts attend this meeting organized by the doctors Louis Lopez-Ibor and Alberto Gil, of the Interventional Neuroradiology unit of the Hospital, discusses advances in the radiological diagnosis both MRI and CT Angio, as well as technical advances in angiography roomswhich allow improve detection of patients with plates of atheroma in the supraórticos trunks and select candidates for treatment precisely to prevent a possible stroke.
These preventive treatments are performed with therapy endovascular, i.e. through placement of stent stenosis, or narrowing of the intracranial vessels and the cervical region thus avoiding accidents stroke (LCA). These procedures provide many advantages for the patient to traditional treatments, to be minimally invasive do not require open surgery while avoiding possible injuries of nerves. Performed without anesthesia, the duration time is one hour and the patient is going to his home the next day of the intervention. And all this with excellent results allowing a faster recovery of the sick.
Stroke units, Madrid
The Hospital ClÃnico San Carlos boasts one of the 6 stroke units that exist in the community of Madrid, in 2009 launched the Plan of Ictus. Madrid has the lowest national rate in mortality from cerebrovascular disease: 26,12 per 100,000 inhabitants compared to the national average which stands at 38. At the national level it is the leading cause of death in women and the second in the general population, assuming the leading cause of disability.
The Madrid Government Council approved earmark a total of 23.604.900 euros for the period 2011-2015 to treat patients with brain damage reversible through 54 for treatment with hospital stay and 69 seats for the treatment of rehabilitation at hospital day.
Prevention through treatment
The specialists gathered at the Hospital ClÃnico addresses prevention of extra and intracranial, strictures which are responsible for 40% of the stroke or LCA. Extracranial stenosis occurs when the atheroma plaque produces a narrowing in the carotid arteries and in the intracranial narrowing occurs in the brain arteries. In both cases the treatment that applies is the angioplasty, which consists of the placement of a stent in narrowing what prevents the artery to become close. This procedure is performed with sedation, in less than an hour and the next day the patient is given high. The success of the intervention is assured by 99%, with minimal complications, avoiding wounds and injuries of nerves in the neck
