Paris, 22 feb (EFE).-two Galician students high school compete to bring to the international space station (ISS) a scientific experiment selected among applicants from Europe, Middle East and Africa in the framework of a competition of the European Space Agency (ESA).
The ESA said today in a statement that the young Laura Calvo and Maria Vila were chosen by a jury which includes, among others, the scientist Stephen Hawking, three astronauts and several members of the NASA, as well as 150,000 users of YouTube, who voted on the internet for the best proposals.
The experiment proposed by the Spanish, called “Surfactants in microgravity”, examines what happens when mix water, SOAP and oil under conditions of lack of seriousness, as that prevailing in the international space station, which orbits 400 kilometers of the Earth.
The Spanish, who will travel to Washington to present the work, explained in a video on the internet (www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF0vOfVQ-Ig), will meet on March 22 the verdict of the jury that will have to choose the best among the team formed by Calvo and Vila and the other two finalist teams in the category of 14-16 years, New Zealand and United States.
In the contest for students aged 17 and 18, have managed to qualify for the final stage representatives of India, Egypt and United States.
In addition to send into space the selected project, the winners of the contest may choose between other two awards consisting of witness the launch of his experiments from Japan or enjoy a training astronaut in the city of the Russia star, once met 18.
