Barcelona, November 2011- Almirall undertakes with diabetes, a disease that affects about 14% of the adult population. Thus, he collaborated with the Spanish society of Diabetes (thirst) on world day of tuberculosis, which was held on 14 November.

THIRST, along with its Foundation, has submitted its programme of activities for World Diabetes Day under the theme takes control of Diabetes already! (2009-2013). In Spain, this day is led by thirst, under the guidelines of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), international organisation that includes more than 200

Activities

To celebrate this world day, thirst and the F-SED (Foundation of thirst) have developed a full programme of activities which took place on Sunday, November 14. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of education and prevention in diabetes.

– like activity, established a big tent of 250 m2 in the madrilenian Park El Retiro, in the area of the curve of the rose garden that extends from the Plaza of the fallen angel to the crossing of Paseo Ferrán Nuñezwhere you install the book fair.

This space remained open to the public since ten in the morning until five in the afternoon, with activities open to the citizens for their participation. In the tent at 11. 00 h, developed several educational workshops based on prevention and education in diabetes on types of insulin delivered by Mercedes Galindo, educator in diabetes of the Clinical Hospital San Carlos; rights and responsibilities of people with diabetes, as well as the workshop on the diets and food for diabetics by the nutritionist Serafín Murillo.

– on this day has also organized the “race against Diabetes” in a space located in one of the tents where there were stationary bikes and treadmills to exercise and healthy livingin the central tent organised by Almirall laboratory.

In addition, in the tent of Madrid health, medical professionals made the Findrisk test to learn about your risk of developing diabetes in the future.

– as final snap to the day and closing at 6 p.m. ceremony proceeded to illumination in blue one of the most emblematic buildings of the capital, Madrid’s Gate of Alcala, continuing with the already successful initiative challenge Monumental in blue, of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). In this way, Almirall workers had the opportunity of testing was instead working to determine the degree of risk for developing diabetes, and additionally also voluntarily control the level of blood sugar (HbA1c) through a simple puncture in the finger.

In addition, they were launched another series of complementary actions to promote healthy lifestyles, such as menus designed specially for the day and the day of open doors in the fitness, with assistance for customized exercise programs.

Diabetes in Spain

Recent data of prevalence of diabetes in Spain, after the conclusive results of the study di@bet.es that were introduced in the last Congress of the SED, have revealed that diabetes affects 13.8% of the adult population, of which 6% desconocerían their situation (with preliminary data for October 2010 which pointed to a prevalence of 12% of the) (adult population with 4% of unknown diabetes). Therefore, the latest data on diabetes in Spain reveal that we are in line with the increase in the prevalence of diabetes worldwide.

On the other hand, almost all studies have estimated that health spending induced by diabetes multiplied by 2 to the general population, this is why the cost per person with diabetes would be, at least, surrounding the annual € 3,000. This would represent between 15 and 20 per cent of total expenditure on health of Spain. Therefore priority awareness and intervention about this disease after their diagnosis to achieve a strict control in its earliest stages and prevent future complications, as well as their costs and implications associated.
