Madrid, July of 2012. The Spanish society of Genetics (sec) and the Pryconsa Foundation, linked to Pryconsa, Coivisa and Isla Canela, enterprises have distinguished contributions from Moya Simarro Andrés and José Ignacio Cubero Salmerón to basic genetics research and research in applications of genetics respectivelyin the fourth edition of the national awards of genetics, as it has become known the jury met in Barcelona;

The awards, which consist of two economic returns of 8000 euros, will be delivered on September 13, 2012, during the 6th Congress of the genetic improvement of plants, which will be held in Gijón from 11 to 13 September. The Congress will provide a framework for meeting and exchange of ideas in the field of genetics, biotechnology and genetic improvement of plants.

The jury of this Fourth Edition, headed by the Chairman of the SEC, Montserrat Aguadé Porres, Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona and awarded in the second edition of the awards in the category of basic genetics research, has chosen these two researchers from 20 nominations.

In the category of genetics applications, the jury has awarded the José Ignacio Cubero Salmerón for his contribution to the genetic improvement of plants, particularly legumes in Mediterranean agriculture, which have not received the attention it deserves its role in human nutrition. He has dealt with very different problems, such as quality, performance and resistance to diseases and pests, and has obtained new cultivated varieties. Also stresses their educational, personal, and published work, his impulse to agricultural research and the conservation of genetic resources in African and Asian countries and his interest in the history of agriculture ”. Trajectory of the national prizes of genetics

Since the first edition of the national prizes of genetics in 2009, these have become a reference in the field of science in Spain, increasing the interest of the community of genetic and scientists in general.

In the first edition were awarded to researchers enshrined as Antonio Garcia-Bellido, Prince of Asturias Award of scientific research and technical and candidate to the Nobel; Santiago Rodríguez de Córdoba, Research Professor of the CSIC in the Centre of biological research in Madrid and Carlos López-Fanjul, Professor of genetics of the Complutense University of Madrid. All have established school and have disciples in prestigious national and international research centers and universities.

In the second edition were awarded the doctors Montserrat Aguadé Porres, current President of the SEC and Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona; Montserrat Baiget Bastús, Director of the service of genetics of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona; and Miguel Angel Toro Ibáñez, Professor of production Animal of the school of engineers agronomists of the Polytechnic University of Madrid in the categories of basic genetic research, human genetic research, and animal breedingplant and micro-organisms, respectively.

In the third edition were awarded the doctors Enrique Cerdá Olmedo, Professor of genetics of the University of Seville and Manel Esteller Badosa, Professor of investigation ICREA (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats) at the Institute of biomedical research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) and associate professor at the University of Barcelona in the categories of basic genetic research and research in applications of genetics, respectively.

on the Pryconsa Foundation

created in 2003, the Pryconsa Foundation is a consequence of the interest that several employees of the companies of the Group Pryconsa, Coivisa and Isla Canela demonstrated by collaborating on projects of social cooperation, education, research, etc. It develops its activity in several directions that include subsidies for the care and social inclusion, research, international cooperation, education and cultural patronage. Since its creation, the Pryconsa Foundation is supporting initiatives of other entities or institutions with their resources, but also generates projects according to the purposes set forth in its statutes. Today it operates primarily in the community of Madrid, although some programs have their recipients in other areas of Spain and even beyond our borders.
