new YORK (Reuters Health) – eating more blueberries, apples
and Pears would be associated with a reduction in the risk of
develop diabetes, according to reveals a study in
United States.
It is that these fruits have flavonoids, natural substances
of certain foods (fruits, vegetables and grains) associated in
some research with a lower risk of developing
heart diseases or cancer.
“ people who eat more blueberries or apples tend to
“
be at risk of developing diabetes type 2 “, said An Pan
researcher of the Faculty of public health from Harvard and
co-author of the new study.
Even so, he clarified that the results do not prove that those fruits
can prevent diabetes.
The study published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition is similar to another widespread investigation a year ago
in the same magazine that had associated the consumption of fruit
rich in flavonoids with a reduction in the risk of developing
hypertension.
The American Diabetes Association estimates that about 26
millions of Americans are diabetic. Disease
appears because the body can not produce or use
correctly insulin, a hormone that converts glucose
blood into energy.
Type 2 diabetes can be controlled with exercise and diet,
without the application of insulin.
In the new study, funded by the institutes
United States health national, the authors assessed the
eating patterns of some 200,000 men and women during
24 years.
Participants, comprising of two cohorts
studies on the United States, health professionals
answered questionnaires about their eating habits.
None had diabetes at the beginning of the study, but a few
12.360 developed during the research period.
The participants consumed less blueberries eaten
less than one portion (half a cup) per month. Those who ate more
enjoyed two or more servings per week.
The team noted that the Blueberry lovers had a
23 percent less risk of developing type 2 diabetes
those not consumed this fruit.
And those who ate five or more blocks per week were a 23
percent less likely to develop the disease than the
that ate them not.
The hypothesis of the authors is that certain flavonoids, with
high concentration in these fruits, elaborating that effect in the
risk for developing diabetes.
“Find data consisting of the three (groups studied)
“
of apples and cranberries are beneficial against the
diabetes type 2, “said Pan to Reuters Health. That was after
considered other risk factors, weight you, smoking
and a family history of diabetes.
Co-authors stated not to have conflicts of interest.
While the sugar of the fruit is increasing rapidly the
blood glucose levels, other substances of fruits,
as the fiber and pectin, would provide benefits associated with
the prevention of diabetes, explained Dr. Loren
Greene, Professor of medicine at New York University that does not
participated in the study.
Research “rightly promotes the consumption of the
“”
fruit instead of fruit juice”, told Reuters Health,
citing recent evidence of the juices rise risk
develop diabetes.
