Madrid, April of 2011- the matrix collagen may soon be used by all dentists as an alternative to the inconvenience and pain arising from connective tissue graft. Dr. Fabio Vignoletti, researcher hired by Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a specialist in periodontics and implants the clinic Periocentrum Madrid, presented the results of pre-clinical and clinical studies that demonstrate the advantages of the use of this new material at the Cannes Osteology Symposium on dental implants.

Perimplantitis is a common problem that affects to implants dental, causing to lose bone and reducing its useful life. In certain clinical situations, to prevent perimplantitis dentists come to make a speech which consists in the increase of the keratinized gingiva. “ The usual technique is take a part of gingiva of the palate and adapt it to the area of the implant; Thus the increase of keratinized gingiva is obtained. However, this type of autograft causes sensation of pain in the patient, can cause bleeding late and needed two areas of surgical intervention ”, explains Dr. Vignoletti.

Prof. Mariano Sanz, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University Complutense of Madrid, and the experts of the Periocentrum Dr. Ramón Lorenzo clinic and Dr. Fabio Vignoletti, that are part of his research team have been the first to compare the graft of connective tissue with the new matrix collagen in two controlled clinical trials, randomised, parallel. The researchers noted the use of the collagen matrix allows an early healing, the patient will feel less sensation of pain, reduces the possibility of producing bleeding and the need for analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs. Thus, to analyze the times of healing they discovered that any sensation of pain with the use of the new biomaterial disappeared a week or ten days earlier in the connective tissue graft and, therefore, the patient’s recovery was much faster.

“ The use of the collagen matrix will help us to improve the quality of tissues in different clinical situations around implants of our patients, it is a way of preventing the development of perimplantitis and assure more long-term health ”, says Dr. Vignoletti. This specialist has already used the new material in several pilot experiences in the clinic Periocentrum Madrid, but the matrix collagen is not marketed in Spain up in a few months.

The Osteology International Symposium, organized by the Osteology Foundation, has brought over 3,000 specialists in Cannes. Madrid, June of 2011- the main causes of gingival inflammation that presented many pregnant women are the presence of the bacterium, Porphyromonas gingivalis and the amount of bacterial plaque. This is the main conclusion of a study conducted by researchers from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid that will soon be published in Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

According to Dr. Ana Carrillo, specialist in periodontics and implants the clinic PerioCentrum Segovia and one of the authors of the study, “ multiple jobs have described an increase in gingival inflammation during pregnancy, but until now were not known the causes of this process. Our work provides for the first time the main factors associated with gestational gingivitis ”.

The bacteria identified by the researchers, Porphyromonas gingivalis, is a very aggressive pathogen that, if you migrate to placental tissues, can cause adverse reactions in pregnancy, preterm delivery and low weight of the baby at birth. This bacterium used as a growth factor progesterone, hormone present in large quantities in women during gestation.

“ Oral health is, therefore, necessary to avoid the appearance of gingival inflammation, as well as to prevent the overgrowth of oral pathogens capable of causing pregnancy complications ”, says Dr. Carrillo.
