pioneers in the 3D application in surgery maxillofacial.
Barcelona, June 2010.- the service of maxillofacial surgery of Centro Médico Teknon has incorporated this month of may 3D technology in all the processes of diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial deformities by orthognathic surgery, which places him as one of the first centres worldwide in the implementation of the 3D technology.
The team of Dr. Federico Hernández Alfaro is the first level Spanish the number of patients treated in surgery of the facial skeleton and one of the top four in Europe.
recent years, this team has developed a research project to integrate 3D into the diagnosis and planning of orthognathic surgery and treatment of maxillofacial deformities. The project, called Orthognathic Surgery 3.0, implies that all patients are studied by three-dimensional radiology, allowing to discriminate asymmetries and alterations in the proportions of the facial elements with a precision of tenths of a millimeter.
later, surgery It is planned and executed in a virtual manner. Thus it can anticipate exactly how to run the process at the time of the actual surgery, calculating the needs of grafts, the size of plates and screws that are necessary to hold the facial bones in the new position. This process also allows generating the so-called CAD/CAM splints, which are surgical guides that will make possible the relocation of the bones (mandible, jaw, Chin, nose, etc.) during surgery, accurately and without having to waste time taking measurements in the operating room. Put another way, these guides generated with CAD/CAM technology from virtual planning prior, contain all the information about the movements to make in the operating room and it means a considerable saving in surgical times.
. after a period of comparative analysis of the classical system, based on the analysis of x-ray in two dimensions and the study of models of plaster of the patient, and the new system, based on the analysis in three dimensions, virtual surgery and generation of splints CAD/CAMIt has been proved the superiority of the latter with regard to accuracy in all phases of the process.
For the team of Dr. Hernández Alfaro, with more than 15 years of experience and over 1,500 patient seized the Orthognathic Surgery 3.0 project is a new paradigm in the handling of patients of maxillofacial deformities by orthognathic surgery. According to data from the Centre 40 per cent of the Spanish population has some deformity maxillofacial.

– intervention has participated, as well as the head of the section of maxillofacial surgery, Francisco Soler, Pedro Franco specialist
Spain, November 2010- the section of maxillofacial surgery of the General Hospital of Castelló has introduced for the first time a Fossa prosthesis bilateral condyle tailored to a patient who suffered a traffic accident that it fractured the jaw of the patient.
Surgical intervention, which has been broadcast since the integrated operating room HDTV 1080i in the hospital, has counted with the participation of the Chief of the section, Dr. Francisco Soler, and the international specialist Dr. Pedro Franco, of Dallas (USA).
Due to the novelty of the first surgical intervention performed with a prosthesis made to measure, the entire operation has been broadcast to the Hall in which has been able to be followed by professionals and specialists from the General Hospital of Castelló and others, such as the peace of Madrid, the Valencia Clinic Hospital ClÃnic of Barcelona, La Fe of Valencia and Juan Canalejo in A Coruña.
Therefore, the clinical meeting has been chaired by the Manager of the Department of health of Castellón, Guillermo Ferran, and medical director of the General Hospital, Francisco Pérez.
The patient, for 40 years, suffered a fracture of the Temporomandibular joint (ATM) due to a traffic accident when he was only four, causing a change in growth and a severe apnea sleep.
TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) is composed of a set of anatomical structures that, with the help of specific muscle groups, it enables the jaw to run varied movements applied to the occlusal function (opening and closing, protrusion, retrusión, laterality).
Despite the fact that he had been involved previously in another health centre to repair the cóndilos (the head rounded at the tip of the jaw that fits in the Palm of another to form a joint), through the placement of two bars, the evolution of the patient required a new assessment by the team of Castelló General maxillofacial surgery.
Since the first performance and operation did not bear fruit, the hospital opted for a TAC in 3 dimensions to generate a model esterolitográfico of the skull and jaw of the patient for a prosthesis to measure.
This Fossa prosthesis condi it bilateral, made of titanium proplast, has been which has been implanted in the speech made yesterday in the integrated operating room of the Hospital General of Castelló.
