Barcelona hosts the 34 th Congress of the Spanish society of Biochemistry and biology Molecular.

since last Monday and until Thursday, September 8 Barcelona to host the thirty-fourth Congress of the Spanish society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM), which was inaugurated last Tuesday, 11 a.m., by the Minister of science and innovation, Cristina Garmendia, accompanied by the Mayor of BarcelonaXavier Trias, the President of the SEBBM, Miguel Ángel de Rosa, the Director General of Biocat, Montserrat Vendrell and the Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Joaquín Ariño, President of the Organizing Committee. The Congress is held in the Palacio de Congresos of Barcelona and has the participation of about thousand researchers.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Bellaterra, Cerdanyola del Vallès, 2011-September La SEBBM is the largest scientific society in Spain and its Congress one of the most important events in the field of biology. The Congress of this year, with more than 200 papers and 500 posters, maintains the scheme of previous years of three simultaneous symposiums, but has been associated with each of them a plenary Conference, given by speakers of high national and international levels. The first symposium, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of cancer ”, presented the latest advances in the study of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. The second was devoted to the signaling cell ” in various research models – bacteria, yeast, vegetable, Drosophila and mammals. The third the universe of proteins: structure and dynamics ”, studied new technologies for mass analysis of genomes and proteomas and ultramoleculares and molecular structures visualization.

The scientists involved include Philip Cohen (MRC, University of Dundee), who gave the keynote address, Richard Marais (Cancer Research UK), Michael Hall (Biozentrum, Universität Basel), Tom Blundell (University of Cambridge), Luis Serrano (Centre for Genomic regulation, Barcelona) and other renowned researchers. Conference L ’ L’Oreal, specifically dedicated to women with a brilliant scientific career, will be taught by Elisa Izaurralde (Max-Planck-Institute). Niemeyer and conferences Leloir, as usual, will be taught by prominent researchers from Chile and Argentina, in this case the professors Martin Montecino (Universidad Andrés Bello, Santiago Chile) and Hugo D. Luján (Catholic University of Córdoba), respectively.

The Congress will welcome addition activities already consolidated as the course Introduction to research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the entrepreneur Forum and meetings of the various groups of the SEBBM. Under the name “Biochemistry in the city”, will be held round tables on the uses and discussions of GM plants and animals and on biochemistry and kitchen. Two round tables will discuss the opportunity that has been the international year of chemistry for the dissemination of science and the assessment of the scientific activity. In parallel with these activities, will take place the presentation of panels and the exhibition of commercial developments.

Also award Isaza-Werfen will be delivered to a young researcher, the Promega Biotech Ibérica award to the best work done in Spain and published in the year 2010, Prix Jose Tormo of structural biology, the prize for the best entrepreneur in biotechnology from a young researcher – within the Forum of the entrepreneur and project sponsored by ASEBIO, Genome Spain, SEBiot and SEBBM – Eppendorf Award to the best scientific picture of the year, the Roche award to the best poster and the EACR Award for the best poster on cancer.

The 34th Edition of the SEBBM Congress has been organized by researchers from the following institutions: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas.
