Beckman Coulter uses InterSystems Ensemble integration automated platform to streamline clinical analysis services.

new solution eliminates the manual receipt of laboratory samples.

Madrid, January of 2013. InterSystems Corporation, the global leader in software for connected healthcare, has announced that Beckman Coulter, one of the leading manufacturers in the world of clinical diagnostic equipment, are using InterSystems Ensemble ® to improve the way of processing the samples in laboratories of hospitals in the United Kingdom. Ensemble is a platform for the integration and development rapid hot-pluggable application. The new solution of automatic reception of samples (ASR) has been developed in less than six months and allows an integral service of clinical analysis which is significantly more efficient than current manual processes.

In early 2012, looking for the highest quality and your balance effectively the cost of laboratory services, Beckman Coulter decided to create a functionality into their systems for specimen processing, eliminating the manual receipt of the samples. After considering several options, including the use of its own technology, Beckman Coulter selected Ensemble to integrate systems of data sources with the information systems of the hospital(LIS Laboratory Information Systems) laboratory and the communication of orders. As a result, now the samples may register automatically, instead of requiring staff to scan the codes of individual bars of each sample, manually.

Leanne Annereau, Gerente de Marketing de Beckman Coulter, pointed out that “we are very pleased to partner with InterSystems. We’ve been impressed by the speed with which Ensemble has allowed us to complete our product development and its collaborative approach: less than six months from concept to delivery. From the beginning, we feel that InterSystems had product and adequate experience to make the project a success. Now we are looking for other areas in which work together”.

The ASR solution provides a number of special benefits for hospitals and doctors. By reducing the strictly manual steps in the laboratory processes, Beckman Coulter believes that a single laboratory can process, now, about 3,000 tubes daily, which translates into savings in time and costs with respect to manual processes. In addition, solution will improve the quality of the results, since a significant proportion of the analytical errors are related with the mismanagement of the samples or concordance of patient data.

Jonathan Selby, Country Manager of United Kingdom and Ireland at InterSystems, adds: “we have built a strong partnership in a short period of time and are very pleased with the idea to continue giving support to Beckman Coulter in the development of innovative solutions that simplify processes, improve accuracy and reduce costs in biomedical tests”.
