Brussels, 8 mar ( EFE).- The Council of Governors of the health of Belgium discourages swimming for infants less than a year because of the risks it poses to their health, according to a report carried out today by the newspaper “Le Soir”.
The official body, which is consulted by the public authorities of the country in all matters related to health, has come to this conclusion after investigations by a dozen of experts.
“Experts have measured risks and rewards.” For children under 12 months, there is no real benefit (…). “On the contrary, are particularly vulnerable, more subject to infection with immature lungs and mucous membranes very reactive,” explained the Director of the study, Micheline Kirsch-Volders, in an interview with “Le Soir”.
Kirsch-Volvers has also reminded that in installations in which practice swimming with babies from water and air temperatures are high, that increase the presence of microorganisms.
The expert ensures that the advantages posed by the pool for younger babies – physical and emotional – can be obtained with a simple bath.
According to “Le Soir”, around 15% of Belgian children practice the swimming with less than a year, a technical that it began to spread in the Decade of the sixties of the last century to accustom children to water and improve their coordination.
