Zaragoza, February of 2012.- the genetic causes of the chronic lymphatic leukemia (LLC) as well as new prospects for the development of future treatments will be discussed today at 5.30 pm in the Faculty of medicine within the biomedical seminars of the Institute of research health Aragon (Aragón IIS). This research centre is formed by the Instituto Aragonés of the health sciences, the University of Zaragoza and Michael Servetus and clinical Lozano Blesa, hospitals to facilitate the generation and application of scientific knowledge capable of improving the health of the population.
Elias Campo Güerri, Professor of pathological anatomy at the University of Barcelona and Director of research of the Hospital ClÃnic i Provincial de Barcelona, will present the first results of the project, developed by the international consortium of the genome of cancer, which has as objective the creation of a complete catalogue of genetic alterations in tumors más common in the population. This project involved the Consortium Spanish of the genome of the leukemia lymphatic Chronicle, which is co-directed by Elias field.
During the scientific session, which will take place in the living room of degrees of the Faculty of medicine, it will offer a new look at the genetic disease causes and hopeful prospects offered by this project in the design of new therapies aimed at those causes. In fact, the human genome project, whose objective was to identify and map the genes of the human genome from a physical and functional point of view and the development of a new generation of DNA sequencing technologies have opened up the possibility of applying radically new knowledge in medicine, and more specifically in the approach to this type of leukemia.
The LLC is more common in Western countries leukemia, assuming 30% of all leukemias. Affects male over 60 people, above all increasing as incidence increases the age. There are no known environmental or occupational risk factors, but it is a predisposition to suffering from family.
ElÃas Campo graduated and received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Barcelona, where he is currently Professor of pathology. He is also Director of research of the Hospital ClÃnic and Provincial de Barcelona and co-director of the Consortium Spanish of the genome of the leukemia lymphatic Chronicle.
IIS Aragon was created through a collaboration agreement between the I+CS (Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences), the University of Zaragoza, the Aragonese of health, Hospital ClÃnico Universitario Lozano Blesa service and the Hospital Universitario Miguel. Mission is to facilitate the generation and application of scientific knowledge capable of improving the health of the population.
