on the occasion of the international women’s day, the Spanish society of Cardiology (SEC) would like to recall that
cardiovascular disease kills 65,000 women every year in Spain, 8% more than men
-cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in Europe, well above caused by any type of cancer (43% vs 5%)
-almost all of the women for heart disease deaths happen after menopause. Thus, cardiovascular mortality occurs in 50% of women aged 65
– while the men are likely to die after their first heart attack, 30% the probability among women is 50%
-various studies, as the CRUSADE have shown that only 15% of cardiópatas women receive proper treatment compared to 56% of men
-La society Spainwave of Cardiology (SEC) warns that many times are the own sick which are unable to discern if they are suffering a heart attack or not, due to the difference in symptoms perceived with respect to the male
Madrid, March 2012.- with a source of the commemoration, today Thursday, March 8the international women’s day, the Spanish society of Cardiology (SEC) wants to remind you that cardiovascular disease is more prevalent among women than among men, causing, in 2009, 65.048 deaths, 8% more than the resumed in males by this same cause, according to the National Institute of statistics (INE) data published in July 2011.
These data indicate that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are positioned as the first cause of death among Spanish feminists, with 35.10% of the deaths. These percentages increase in ten regions, headed by Asturias, Andalusia and Extremadura, with 39,51%, 38,07%, and 37.23% of female deaths from CVD respectively. On the contrary, with minor percentage of cardiovascular death are the Canary Islands, the Madrid and Navarre, with 30.62%, 31.44% and 32,07% respectively.
Although cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in Europe, is the misperception that cancer causes more deaths than this ”, highlights the DRA. Miracles Pedreira, Member of the SEC and cardiologist cardiology and service unit coronary of Centre hospitalier universitaire of Santiago de Compostela (CHUS). So, while 5% of deaths in European women is the result of some kind of cancer, female deaths due to cardiovascular sit at lathe 45% ”, continues the doctor.
Three out of ten deaths occurring among the female population are directly related to cardiovascular health, but it was not until reaching menopause, that women are more likely to suffer from such diseases. Cardiovascular mortality occurs in 50% of women aged 65 and is from menopause when women have a worse prognosis than men. This is due to that the estrogenic activity during the childbearing age preserves the endothelial function of the arteries and lowers cholesterol, moreover, reduces the viscosity of blood, minimizing the risk of thrombosis ”, explains the DRA. Pedreira.
In this sense, cardiovascular diseases tend to be most severe among women, an example is that males have a 30% chance of dying after his first heart attack, while in women this probability increases to 50%.
Another aspect that should be noted is the delay on suspicion of cardiovascular disease and lower use of complementary studies. Often, women receive less, or later, the necessary treatment. This has been evident in extensive records as a CRUSADE, which has collected data of more than 165,000 patients of 400 American hospitals in the last decade. Thus, registration has shown that only 15% of women receive treatment appropriate to their disease compared to 56% of men.
Is very important that we work together to publicize the effects of female cardiovascular disease, that there remains a belief that this affects more men among all ”, highlights the DRA. Pedreira. Another aspect we noticed the cardiologists is that women have difficulty most realize that are suffering from a heart attack. This is must to that symptoms differ from those with men, thus when a woman is suffering a heart attack, can notice burning in the upper region of the abdomen, have dizziness, upset stomach, and sweating. In the majority of cases, women do not realize that is suffering from a heart attack because not note chest pain and when he arrives at the hospital has a worse prognosis than a man ”, warns Dr.
Precisely, in order to know more accurately how affects the CVD in women and, more specifically ischemic heart disease, disease responsible for 15,300 female deaths per year, the SEC promotes registration siren, the first observational study on stable ischemic heart disease in women carried out in Europe and includes 720 women from all Spain.
