Use of toxin by dental surgeons with therapeutic goals continues to be allowed.
the Federal Council of dentistry (CFO) vetoed the use of botulinum toxin and hilaruônico acid by dental surgeons for aesthetic purposes. The resolution was published in the Official Gazette last Monday (05/09). The use of therapeutic goals with toxin is still allowed.
the decision was taken after a meeting held between 25 and 26 August where attended the Presidents of regional councils. The CFO says in the resolution that aesthetic correction operations outside the area of activity of Dental professionals. The text defines that the Council will ban the use of hyaluronic acid in dental procedures until they have the best scientific evidence and recognition of its use in dental ” area and prohibit the use of botulinum toxin for aesthetic purposes only and allow for therapeutic use in dental procedures ”

Low standards on the use of the use of botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid
the President of the Conselho Federal de Odontologia, according to resolution adopted at the extraordinary meeting of the Plenary – Joint Meeting with the Presidents of regional councils of dentistry, held on 25 and August 26, 2011,
whereas the perioral region should only be treated by the surgeon-dentist in the event of loss of function, not being established no legal forecast for aesthetic procedures in internal areas of the integumentary system;
whereas the facial filler for aesthetic correction is given in the DermIS and, therefore, that area is not defined as the practice of the dental surgeon;
whereas the literature so far does not secure conditions of use of these substances and there is a lack of scientific evidence in odontological;
whereas the law 5,081, 8/24/1966, prays in his article 6°, which is up to the surgeon-dentist: “I – practise all acts relevant to dentistry, stemming from knowledge gained in regular course or postgraduate courses; II – prescribe and implement proprietary medicinal products, internal and external use indicated in Dentistry; “;
Considering what says the consolidation of standards for procedures in dentistry
Councils;
whereas there is no standard or legislation that may he support the surgeon-dentist in the employment of techniques or fill medications or facial sores in their area of expertise, with eminently purpose aesthetic, with use of substances such as hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin;
whereas article 3 of the code of ethics has Dental: “I – diagnose, plan and execute treatments, with freedom of belief, within the limits of their powers, observed the current state of science and his professional dignity;” that article 7° says that ethics constitutes infraction, and in its section V, has “run or propose unnecessary treatment or for which is not qualified;” and20, that article says that “constitutes infraction ethics, even in hospital environment, perform surgical intervention outside the scope of dentistry.”;
RESOLVES:
art. 1. Prohibit the use of hyaluronic acid in dental procedures until it has the best scientific evidence and recognition of its use in dental
area.
art.2. Prohibit the use of botulinum toxin for aesthetic purposes only and allow for therapeutic use in dental procedures.

. Art. This resolution shall enter into force on the date of its publication in the Official Press, repealed the provisions to the contrary.
