COCEMFE calls accessible care to battered women facilities.

Madrid, February 2012.- the Spanish Confederation of people with physical disability and organic (COCEMFE) would like to congratulate the Ministry Health, social services and equality for its preparatory work for the implementation of a custom Plan against domestic violence, as well as by the publication of a macroencuesta that includes the variable of disabilities and allows know the dimension of the problem.
About 20% of women with serious disabilities have suffered gender-based violence ever in their lives and more than 30% of them still did not get out of the abuse. For the President of COCEMFE, Mario GarcÃa, these figures show that it should give new impetus to the fight against gender-based violence, and therefore the future plan should be based on its proximity to each victim and the specific attention of the needs of each one of them ”.
In addition, Mario GarcÃa has asked the Ministry of health, social services and equality that solvent the serious obstacles that still exist to make use of available resources such as foster homes or emergency services.
Women with disabilities are at greater risk of being victims of violence due to lack of information and self-esteem, the real difficulty defend themselves of who attacks them or fear of denouncing the person with which coexist and which depend on.
Similarly, since COCEMFE ask that the National Observatory for gender violence incorporated the variable of disability in its statistics to know exactly how many are victims of gender-based violence and what type of disability presented ”, said Mario GarcÃa.
COCEMFE, together with the National Confederation of disabled women, is developing since 2010 a programme for the prevention of domestic violence against women with disabilities in five autonomous regions: Andalusia, Asturias, Catalonia, Castile – La Mancha, Valencian Community, Spain.
After the success of the previous year, Obra Social la Caixa ” and COCEMFE have agreed to extend the collaboration for the development of this program that has to run professional responsible for develop workshops with women with disabilities, and training courses for the entities that integrate disability movementas well as groups of incidence in the detection of violence on women with disabilities, so that take it into account when dealing with them and help stamp it out.
As a novelty, in 2011 joined Galicia autonomous communication and this year there will be an accompaniment of women with disabilities who have participated in the programme, and for if personal situation have another type of needs.
The Spanish Confederation of people with physical disability and organic (COCEMFE) is a non-governmental non-profit that was founded in 1980. It aims to unite, strengthen and form coordinate the efforts and activities of the entities working in favour of persons with disabilities physical and organic to defend their rights and improve their quality of life. The entity brings together more than 1,360 organizations divided into autonomous confederations, State entities and provincial federations, which in turn, grouped to different local associations.
