45 athletes with type 1 diabetes are competing in the Mitja Marató de Granollers
-the Foundation for Diabetes participates with his Diatlétic team in the Mitja Marathon of Granollers. 45 athletes with diabetes type 1 are the 21 kilometres of the route of this emblematic average maratón.
-People with diabetes can compete in track and field tests, although they must have a tighter control over your glucose levels in blood, both before and during and after activity.
Madrid, January 2012.- Diabetes is not a limitation in the practice of physical exercise, indeed its practice is one of the most effective ways to take action against diabetes: prevent diabetes type 2 and improves control in diabetes type 1. Far from being a limitation or impediment, physical exercise is one of the pillars of the treatment of type 1 diabetes, that is why the Diabetes Foundation promotes sports among people with diabetes and organizes the participation of Diatlétic in sporting events such as the half marathon of Granollers, which will take place the prfilled day, February 5, 2012.
The 45 participants of this team are coordinated by Jaume Picazos, Bachelor’s degree in physical education, national coach for athletics and patron of the Foundation for Diabetes, undertakes to carry out a plan of training prior to the race, which coordinates the position of the supplies during, as well as the need for hydration and have an adequate blood glucose level of the riders involved in the Diatlétic team.
The Foundation for Diabetes advised tighter control than usual, both before and during and after having run the half marathon.
Jaume Picazos explains that before a physical test like this, people with diabetes must adopt stricter control, that the own previous coaches have an impact in that they have to lower the dose of insulin and sometimes increase the contribution of carbohydrate at meals ”. During the half-marathon, you must always avoid dehydration, begin with an extra contribution of carbohydrates and provide supplies during water and intake of sugars or carbohydrates for quick absorption. Also – adds Picazos – must be made controls glucose in blood during the race to avoid possible frequent ”. After 24-48 hours after the marathon, in addition, may be frequent or cuts of glucose in blood at night, in a way that must continue controlling blood glucose in a strict way, controlling the setting of
hydrates of carbon and doses of insulin ”.
Team Diatlétic
On the initiative of the Foundation for Diabetes, the DIATLÉTIC team was formed in February 2006. Its members, athletes with diabetes from different geographical areas of Spain run to:
-highlight that diabetes is not an impediment to lead a life like everyone else
-promote the practice of responsible sports among people with diabetes since that date, DIATLETIC, sponsored by the Foundation for Diabetes has been involved in 17 marathons and 130 half marathonstotaling about 3,500 kilometres of race. So far no has been low for serious frequent or Ketoacidosis.

The Diabetes Foundation is a charitable non-profit and of general interest which is intended to contribute to the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications, as well as to the improvement of the quality of life for people with diabetes.
