El syndrome originally and the importance of early diagnosis of the ERC
The relationship between the heart and kidneys is quite unknown by the general population. However, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in renal patients (1).
The survey ENPER by ALCER Foundation recently shows that 1 of every 5 of these patients is unknown that kidney damage can affect you the heart.
Another study indicates that the kidney patients who are at an advanced stage are 10 times more likely to submit a cardiovascular episode in a year than those with normal renal function (2). Why early detection of kidney disease is fundamental, because it can help stop the progression of the disease and cardiovascular complications.
Furthermore, patients with a cardiovascular impairment must know that they are more likely to also suffer kidney failure.
Chronic kidney disease (ERC)
Chronic kidney disease (ERC) is a disorder in which the kidneys are less effective to eliminate toxins from the bloodstream and secrete hormones important for a healthy blood and bone function. There are five stages of decline in kidney function. The most severe phase (stage 5) represents renal failure. It is estimated that the ERC affects 10% of the population (3) and they are patients who also have an increased risk of cardiovascular complications.
About ALCER
The Association for the fight against the renal diseases, ALCER, is a non-profit created in 1976. A group of kidney patients were proposed to improve the living conditions of this group, in an era where access to dialysis treatment was limited to a very small number of patients and the possibility of receiving a kidney transplant were very scarce, due among other things, to the validity of a law that regulated this matter very obsolete and little awareness existing in the Spanish society for organ donation. Little by little, the Association was born in principle on a national level, was extended to other provinces, creating different delegations. This motivated the need for a body to coordinate efforts, projects, demands and to serve for the exchange of views of all the associations. In 1981, was born the ALCER National Federation, which was declared of public utility by the Council of Ministers in 1984.
In the year 2003 in order to deepen the relationship between health professionals dedicated to the Nephrology and the National Federation of ALCER, General Assembly of the entity, decided to set up the Foundation Renal ALCER Spain, which has become an important tool to develop various projects which share a common goal which led to the creation of the Associationdoes, and remains to date: the improvement of the quality of life of the collective of kidney patients and their family.
