Castellón, 2011-October drug addicts have self-esteem lower than the rest of the population, according to a study conducted by the psychologist of the Consorcio Hospitalario Provincial of Castellón Abel Baquero.El studyIt has been exhibited in the second International Congress of Dual pathology which was held in Barcelona, compares the situation of protection and social adjustment in relation to the consumption of substances, disorders of personality and self-esteem.
Factors related to substance use, patterns of personality or the way of people defined on many occasions the probability of dependence and/or abuse drugs. Thus, doctor Baquero has shown that self-esteem plays a key role in the likelihood of suffering from an addiction.
When analysing the relationship of self-esteem with the consumption of substances is observed that drug consumers subjects have a lower staff assessment than the rest of the population, which affects the patient’s evolution and its self-perception as addict ”, noted Baquero.
As he picks up his study, there are social as unemployment or the uprooting of family factors that have a greater influence on people with low self-esteem. And when a person does not accept herself, not adapted to the changes or presents a greater frustration intolerance it has greater possibilities of consuming drugs on a regular basis and, therefore, of mental illness as a result of that addiction.
For the completion of this study, Baquero has analysed 236 people among which there were people without problems, a group of mental patients consumers of drugs, and for the first time, has been studied for people with social problems such as homeless people.
The study shows that there are coincidences in the personality of drug addicts and passers-by as the low self-esteem.
There are people who have everything, but their low self-esteem leads them to the world of drugs or destitution. Others, however, have nothing, but show a greater confidence in themselves, are more optimistic and manage to overcome the difficulties ”, explained psychologist.
