Madrid, March of 2013- each year more than 200,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Spain and it is estimated that nearly 1.5 million people currently have the disease. Adapt current health resources to this new demand for care is a priority for the Foundation for the excellence and the quality of Oncology (ECO), a platform of experts formed by the heads of the main Spanish hospitals Oncology.
In this sense, giving the family physicians of a higher resolution, attention span and detection of cancer cases is considered the cornerstone of this healthcare change. For this reason, ECO Foundation, in collaboration with the Spanish society of family and community (semFYC) medicine has organized the first refresher course in cancer formation, which is meant to more than 30,000 Spanish family physicians.
The family doctor is the Allied main oncologist in symptom control and follow-up of patients, hence the importance of establishing channels of communication and collaboration ”, emphasizes Dr. Carlos Camps, ECO Foundation and Chief of Oncology of the Hospital General de Valencia. so far the specialty has been living inside doors of the Hospital. Our is duty to open up and partnering with a figure so essential to the health care system as it is the family physician. This will allow us better care to patients ”, adds Camps.

for the ECO Foundation President, on the one hand, the objective of this training is to provide these optional tools of analysis and detection, which allow a more prompt referral to a specialist and, on the otherjointly develop a guide for action against the chronic patient who avoid complications, relapse and readmission ”. As explained by Dr. Domingo Orozco, Vice President of semFYC, the course will address three main areas of interest: early diagnosis and identification of tumors, how to act against the toxicity and side effects of antitumor treatments and, finally, follow-up and problems presents the so-called ‘ survivor long ’i.e., those patients that have overcome the disease, but that will require periodic review during its lifetime ”.
The training course will be developed, with the collaboration of MSD, through its platform Univadis online during the second quarter of 2013, so it can access more than 30,000 physicians in family which currently exist in Spain.
The course has the scientific endorsement of the doctors Carlos Camps, and Eduardo DÃaz Rubio, President and Vice President of Fundación echo respectively, as well as from semFYC. In addition, is coordinated by oncologists Manuel Benavides, and Manuel Codes, both members of the echo Foundation, and by Mercè March and Fernando López Valverde family physicians.
