Nairobi, 6 sep (EFE).-the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has accused senior officials of his Government to spread the virus of human immunodeficiency (HIV) which causes AIDS, reported today by the State newspaper “The Herald”.
Mugabe, of 87 years, it requested those charges “discipline” in a culture that allows men to have “as many wives as possible”.
“Know cases of men who, although they take even ARV (antiretroviral drugs), pass a woman to another”, said the head of State at a Conference on AIDS held Monday in Zimbabwe.
In 2001, at least six of the 22 Ministers of the Cabinet of Mugabe received medical treatment for AIDS.
In Zimbabwe, one of the countries most affected by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, one in seven people is estimated to being infected by HIV.
There are no figures for the current Cabinet, the Deputy Prime Minister Zimbabwean, Thokozani Khupe, announced last month a plan to ensure that all the men in the Cabinet are circumcised “for example”, and reduce the rate of persons infected with the AIDS virus.
A study presented last June, developed by the United Nations Fund for children (UNICEF) and the World Bank indicates that nearly 2,500 young people become infected with HIV every day around the world, and sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by this virus on the planet. EFE
