Barcelona, March 2012.- From 22 to 25 March was held in Rio de Janeiro the 2nd Latin American Congress on Controversies to Consensus in Diabetes, Obesity and Hypertension (CODHy), a biannual International Congress which in its previous edition gathered around 2,000 doctors from 52 different countries. Success of dietary protein in obese patients
Dr. Felipe Casanueva, Chairman of the International Society of Endocrinology (ISE) and Chief of the service of Endocrinology and nutrition of the Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, along with the DRA. Isabella Bussade, researcher in the Group of obesity and food in Brazil disorders, through its symposium presented the results of the ProKal study, a clinical trial that evaluated the effectiveness of dietary protein (method PronoKal ®) on a hypocaloric diet balanced in obese patients.
The main results presented show that the 6 months, patients with diet protein lose more fat and less lean mass, than patients with hypocaloric diet. In particular, of the total body weight, patients with diet protein reduced their fat mass in 9 points, while the calorie diet only in 4, which indicates a statistically significant difference. With regard to the preservation of muscle mass, the value of the group with PronoKal ® is statistically higher than the of hypocaloric diet, with 62,88% values vs. 57,34% of total body weight.
At the analytical level, both specialists also spoke of patients in study analytical improvements, that although they are present in both groups, patients who have followed the diet protein show a special improvement in the figures for total cholesterol, reaching almost in 30 units reduce the results the initial visit (205,60 mg/dL vs. 176,72 mg/dL). On the other hand, patients with hypocaloric diet have fallen only 7 units (185,15 mg/dL vs. 178,67 mg/dL). For patients with obesity and other co-morbidities, these figures are especially revealing, with dietary protein weight loss occurs mainly at the expense of fat, and this will affect a significant improvement not only in terms of decoration, but also of their State of health and quality of life.
Doctors also spoke of the figures on evolution index of Corporal mass (IMC), which at 6 months of treatment is significantly reduced in patients with PronoKal ®, until you reach a BMI of overweight (< 30), in proportion to patients with hypocaloric diet that hold grade 1 obesity (> 30), with a difference of 4,69 points between the two groups. Ultimately, these data show that the diet protein the patient begins to observe the results already in the first months of treatment, which often becomes an incentive to reinforce commitment to weight loss and maintenance in the long term.

On the ProKal study
The ProKal study, coordinated by Dr. Basil Moreno, President of the foundation of the Spanish society for the study of obesity (SEEDO) and Chief of the service of Endocrinology and nutrition of the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, is done in the obesity unit from the same hospital, one of the first line to Spanish level hospitals.
The study population corresponds to 80 patients of both sexes, between 18 and 65, with a BMI greater than or equal to 30, divided into 1: 1 into two groups portion.
