Madrid, December of 2011- the Deputy of the General Council of schools of physical therapists of Spain (CGCFE), Almansa Núñez, has assured us on the occasion of the international day of multiple sclerosiswhich was held yesterday Sunday, December 18, the physiotherapy aims of return, the person suffering from the disease, its normal functions and its independence and integrity to the extent possible, trying to improve their quality of life ”.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the Central nervous system (CNS), which produces an alteration of myelin sheaths, responsible for the conduction of nerve impulses. In Spain there are 40,000 people with multiple sclerosis in Europe 500,000 and more than two million worldwide.

This disease often occur in young adults, with a higher incidence in women when it occurs in young age bands and higher incidence in men when the disease appears above the age of 40.

As has been stressed the Vice-Secretary of the CGCFE, while the exact cause of Ms is unknown, many scientists believe the destruction of the myelin is the result of an abnormal response of the immune system toward the body itself. In addition, they can contribute to its development genetic and/or environmental factors.

Some hypotheses point out that Ms could have a viral origin, although no reliable scientific evidence indicative of a specific virus causing the process are available at the moment.

Almansa Núñez pointed out that the evolution of the disease varies greatly, because there are cases in which can carry a relatively normal life and others in which the quality of life is seriously affected.

A person with Ms usually has more than one symptom but not all people suffer from all the existing symptoms. The most frequent are: weakness, tingling, little coordination, fatigue, problems of balance, visual disturbances, tremor, spasticity or muscular rigidity, disorders of speech, unsteady gait (ataxia), intestinal or urinary problems, problems with sexual function, sensitivity to heat, problems with memory and cognitive and emotional disorders.

Today, as he has said Almansa Núñez, proven ” that a smooth and constant physical activity is essential to avoid the complications that can lead to some of the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, as well as to maintain and improve those functions that have been altered. For this reason, physical therapy is also essential to improve the quality of life of those affected.

The treatment of physical therapy, which aims to improve the quality of life of people affected by the disease, will consist of cinesiterapia, manual lynphatic drainage, massage, electrotherapy, stretching, exercise of balance and coordination, as well as re-education of the March, among others.
