Majadahonda, January 2012- the Department of Oncology medical of the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahondacentre belonging to the health network of the community of Madrid, launched in June last year, a unit of clinical research in Oncology, with the aim of promoting research in this field within the hospital.

Since its commissioning, the number of clinical trials proposed by biomedical research laboratories have multiplied by six in the first months of activity. 2010 Proposed to the Centre a total of 14 trials in the field of Oncology – one more than a month–and only in the first six months of the unit since they have been received 35 proposals, an average of almost six more each month. Medical Oncology service is currently developing, in different stages, a total of 62 clinical trials with more than 200 participating patients.

The servicio de Oncología Médica, directed by Dr. Mariano Provencio Pulla, has created a multidisciplinary team comprising a medical oncologist, two pharmaceutical, a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a nurse, devoted to the coordination and monitoring of clinical trials in Oncology in the hospital. Also the Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda has designed new spaces unit professionals to develop their work. According to Dr. Provencio research in medical development is a priority and has a direct impact on the quality of the assistance, making possible the understanding of scientific advances and their translation into everyday oncologic practice ”.

Increased health care activity

Parallel to the increase in research activity, medical oncology service has experienced a remarkable increase of activity and quality in health care. The number of new clients served by this service has increased by 62% over the past year and a half. If in 2009 there were 698 further consultations in this field, generated by new patients in the past 12 months analysed this figure has risen, to 1.134.
