Madrid, December of 2011- unit of breast pathology of the Hospital Universitario La Paz is the first Center of the community of Madrid and one of the seven Spaniards joined SenoNetwork, the first global network of clinical centers dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. It is a project of the European society of Mammalogy (EUSOMA) and the European School of Oncology which aims to provide the best care to cancer.
More than 100 specialists in the care of breast cancer have gathered at the Hospital Universitario La Paz to form in the treatment of patients with breast cancer through a multi-disciplinary specialist unit, which increases the chances of survival of the patients and saving costs.
This is precisely the vision of the international network SenoNetwork which includes a total of 142 centres around the world, in his guide 123 of Europe, and seven of Spain: hospital complexes of Vigo and Ourense, Hospital de Cruces, Arnaldus Hospital, Hospital La Fe, MD Anderson, and now La Paz. The European Parliament in 2009 a statement requesting the States members that ensured, by 2016, a widespread support of patients with breast cancer, through interdisciplinary centers in Mammalogy.
According to the European directive, these units must meet certain requirements as accessible equally to the entire population, to be recognized how such by health centres, all members should have specific training, in at least 90% of cases the treatment must design individually at a multidisciplinary meeting and all results must be auditable.
To be able to form part of the network, the unit must be accredited the diagnosis and treatment of more than 150 new cases a year breast cancer; have adequate means and highly qualified experts in all disciplines involved in the management of breast disease; perform weekly sessions to discuss the multicisciplinar approach in all cases, and try to achieve the quality standards recommended by EUSOMA, the European Coalition of breast cancer and the European Parliament.
250 new cases
In the unit of breast pathology of peace is multidisciplinary and it includes specialists in gynaecology, Nuclear Medicine, General Surgery, CrirugÃa plastic and reconstructive surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and Psychiatryas well as nurses specialized. In the unit are more than 250 new cases per year and since its inception 40 years ago have been dealt with more than 8,000 cases of breast cancer, 360 breast reconstructions have been made, and 1,000 selective Sentinel lymph node biopsies have been conducted.
