near 200 specialists gathered in Avila on the occasion of the 8th meeting of the Group of Vascular risk the Spanish society of internal medicine (SEMI) held on 19 and 20 April.

-more than 90% of patients treated in hospital internal medicine consultations presents some vascular risk factor

-obesity, hypertension, smoking, Dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus type 2, the main risk factors

– during the meeting presented a consensus among scientific societies to achieve an interdisciplinary model in the treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease

Ávila, April 2012.- approximately 9 of every 10 patients treated in hospital internal medicine consultations presented one of the major vascular risk factors. The treatment of these factors (obesity, hypertension, smoking, Dyslipidemia or diabetes mellitus type 2, among others) are dealt with in many cases in isolation, something which, according to Dr. Miguel Camafort, Coordinator of the Group of Vascular risk of the Spanish society of internal medicine (SEMI), is not practical. The internist must deal with these problems in a global and comprehensive manner what has proven to be more effective ”, said the expert.

In that regard, 19 and 20 April was held in Avila the VIII meeting of the Group of risk Vascular of the SEMI, where 200 specialists in internal medicine and other related specialties and has as objectives place emphasis in this global risk management, strengthen the training of these professionalsupdate the latest developments in the field and to share clinical data generated from research projects of the group.

In addition, during the meeting, the experts confronted the latest evidence on the effects of classic and modern diets in preventing vascular risk, thanks to new diagnostic tools such as the genetic and new treatments like sglt1 and CETP inhibitors.

Also attending professionals have witnessed the presentation of a consensus among scientific societies – including the Spanish society of family and community (SEMFYC) medicine, the Spanish society of physicians in primary care (SEMERGEN), the Spanish society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SACV) and the own SEMI-to achieve an interdisciplinary model in Perifé Arterial DiseaseRica.

Masked hypertension and clinical disease evolution

Also at the meeting were presented the latest results of the ESTHEN study on the masked hypertension (HTAE), in its fourth edition. According to Dr. Camafort, it is estimated that you between 10 and 50 per cent of the population afflicted, depending on their characteristics, and is more common in male smokers and overweight ”. Also during the event were presented the findings from the FRENA registry on arterial disease, which already has about 4,000 patients in 11 publications and follow-up and allows to know to what extent influences the proper control of risk factors on the clinical progression of disease in routine clinical practice conditions.

This study includes patients who have suffered a symptomatic episode of arterial ischemia, coronary (ischaemic stroke or transient ischemic attack), cerebral level (myocardial infarction, stable or unstable angina) or in the lower limbs (ischemia, acute or chronic, intermittent claudication).
