The echo Foundation convenes its awards the excellent Oncology.

-the aim of these awards, which are held in its second edition, is to increase public recognition of specialty and promote their advancement

Madrid, January of 2013- the Foundation for excellence and quality in Oncology (ECO) has launched the second edition of its Awards ECO ”targeting those individuals and entities who have helped and contributed significantly to the development of this medical area during 2012. The objective of these awards is to increase public recognition of a specialty that has made significant progress in the past 10 years and which, thanks to the work of oncologists, associations, medical societies, working groups and researchers has placed Spain in the top places in Europe in terms of reducing the mortality rate and treatments.

The awards consist of three different categories: scientific and clinical career award for medical oncologists, award for the Social personality more important within the field of Oncology and prize to the best informative contribution on the specialty.

The candidates for the first award will be medical oncologists that Spaniards, carry out their activity in health centres and/or research whether they are public or private, and which have contributed especially to the development of the medical oncology. Candidates from the second category may be any natural or legal person which develops its activity in Spain and has worked in a meaningful way in the development of the specialty, the fight against cancer or support for the improvement of the quality of life of patients. The third award will reward those journalists and media outlets that carry out their activity nationally, contributing in a better diffusion of the Oncology or the fight against cancer.

Any specialist in Oncology or association involved in this area can present the candidature of that person or entity that creates worthy of these awards.

Jury of the Awards ECO ” will be formed by representatives of the Spanish society of medical oncology (SEOM), the Spanish Association of research on Cancer (ASEICA), of the Royal National Academy of medicine, the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) and foundation ECO.

Nominations may be submitted until 30 March 2013 through the mail fundacioneco@luzan5.es. Prizes will be awarded next month in June at an event organised at the Royal National Academy of medicine.

Oncologists are looking for, in this way, promote the public recognition of those who have helped to promote the specialty either from clinical, scientific or informative level. In the last edition the awards relapsed into Dr. Jaime Sanz, head of Oncology of the Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla (Santander), in the Spanish Association against Cancer, and the journalist Luis José de la Serna.

ECHO Foundation is a platform of experts formed by the heads of the main Spanish hospitals Oncology. It is oriented to achieve excellence and quality in Oncology, searching for and developing solutions and tools enabling to achieve this end. Thus, this network of experts, promotes quality in three areas: assistance to the patient, both received and perceived, specialized training and the investigation.
