new YORK (Reuters Health) – A study on more than 1
million women of the United Kingdom confirms the relationship between the
obesity and the risk of venous thromboembolism ( VTE)
are blood clots in the veins, in
general of legs.
The results show that the more weight you have
a woman, more need to have surgery, which is one of
main VTE risk factors.
“Is not completely unexpected” because obesity
increases the risk of developing some diseases that can be
lead to an operating room, explained the author Lianne Parkin, of
the University of Otago, New Zealand.
“but, as we know, our study is the first to
“”
analyzes the relationship”, said Parkin.
The team found that five out of every 1,000 women with weight
normal that they were operated in six years they developed a clot
in a deep vein or an embolism of lung in 12 weeks
after surgery, compared with seven in every 1,000
women with overweight or obesity.
On the other hand, 1,000 women with normal weight be 0.1 not
were operated developed a VTE in those 12 weeks, compared
with 0.2 of 1,000 women with overweight or obesity.
Parkin pointed out that the risk of developing clots grew
along with the weight of the participants.
“This suggests that losing weight albeit very little would (in
terms of the reduction of the risk of developing a VTE) to
“”
women with overweight or obesity”, said.
The results, published in the journal Circulation, arise
the study of more than 1.1 million British of 56 women
years, on average, at the beginning of the study. The team used the
hospital medical records and death certificates
to detect cases of VTE in six years.
In that period, 6.438 women were hospitalized or
were killed by a VTE; in almost 1,900, the clot formed in the
12 weeks after surgery. (During the period
)
studied, more than 641,000 women had at least one
(
surgery).
Overweight or obese women were 22 per cent
more prone than the thinner to need surgery.
For the team, these findings probably underestimate the
real number of women who developed a TEV, because the
detection and treatment of blood clots in the veins of the
legs can make them a primary care physician.
These clots are almost always diagnosed by the sÃntoma:
pain in the calf, swelling of the ankles and feet,
and fever in the affected area.
Treatment includes medications to avoid that the
clot continue to grow or prevent new clots. Use SOCKS
compression also prevents its formation.
For Parkin, best thing a woman can do with
excess weight to reduce the risk of suffering a VTE not
surgical is slimming.
“in addition to weight loss, it is important to increase the
“
physical activity. “The immobility is a risk factor of the
TVE, and people with overweight and obesity tend to be more
sedentary”, added the expert.
