The Hospital del Sureste sets in motion a multidisciplinary breast cancer unit

Madrid, January 2012- the Hospital del Sureste, belonging to the public health network in the community of Madrid, it has launched the multidisciplinary unit of breast cancer, which offers comprehensive care to patients affected by this disease.
The unit allows patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer can be treated in a specific service by different specialists involved in medical and surgical treatment and follow-up of the process: gynecologists, oncologists, radiologists or general surgeons.
Surgical treatment includes from the conservative surgery of the breast and armpit to the reconstruction of the breast, with the most appropriate technique in each case. The Hospital del Sureste performs the breast reconstruction in the same intervention, permitting the case, which contributes to reducing the psychological trauma and avoid possible emotional disorders such as mutilation and assault of the disease, improving the self-esteem of the patient.
The advantages for the patient who comes to the consultation of breast cancer unit are greater flexibility in the planning of treatment, minor surgical waiting time and higher quality care.
People with suspected breast cancer can access the unit from the programme for early detection of cancer of breast, community of Madrid, the centers of primary care, the consultation of family cancer or even from emergency or gynaecology.
The Committee of tumors of the Hospital studied diagnoses at its weekly meeting and becomes the multidisciplinary consultation in the process of breast cancer, in which pass visit all the specialists who should be involved together in the treatment of each patient.
2,500 new cases of breast cancer per year in Madrid
Breast cancer is malignant more frequent among women of all ages in Spain fringes. Each year are diagnosed more than 21,000 new cases of the disease, of which more than 2,500 correspond to the community of Madrid.
The Ministry of health of Madrid has the programme for early detection of breast cancer (Deprecam) which consists in carrying out every two years a radiological breast exploration to all women aged 50 to 69, ages where breast cancer is the leading cause of mortality.
Thanks to this program we have explored to more than one million women since its launch in motion and 0.5 per cent of them were sent to diagnostic confirmation to a hospital because there was suspicion of malignancy.
