Torrevieja, January 2012.- The Hospital in Torrevieja has hosted a training talk for midwives and practitioners of nursing, aimed at prevention and awareness about drinking alcohol during pregnancy and lactation.
The meeting framed in this awareness campaign, directed by Mr. Esteban Jiménez Pina, técnico superior research, has counted on the participation of professional nurses and midwives, professionals more closely associated with the comprehensive care of the pregnant woman and pediatric patients from the Health Department, Torrevieja.
From the direction of nursing of the torrevejense Centre are promoted such initiatives that contribute in the prevention and raising awareness about issues that affect directly the health of patients.
Attendees have able to know the risks and management must be made of this type of patient, forming the importance of prevention and awareness-raising on this issue.
The awareness campaign has been presented by Dr. Francisco Alcantud MarÃn and Ms Yurena Alonso Esteban, members of the research team of the Department of evolutionary psychology and education at the University of Valencia.
The initiative has been greeted with enthusiasm by the professionals and services, given that this is a little addressed casuistry, despite being a problem that concerns both women you pregnant as their nursing babies, creates many problems for the whole of the patients.
The consumption of alcohol by pregnant women can cause known fetal alcohol syndrome, as well as complications of preterm birth, which are detrimental to the health and development of infants.
Moderate or excessive alcohol during pregnancy can lead to a miscarriage or a variety of disabilities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, of which the most serious is fetal alcohol syndrome.
From the direction of nursing recommended to pregnant women, and to those women that are in nursing period, not alcohol, in order to avoid health problems associated with the ingestion of alcoholic beverages both for mother and newborn infants.
Thus, promoting campaigns of awareness and intervention, informing the whole of society on the implications and negative effects that may arise from those unhealthy living habits.
Consumption of alcohol, a global problem
The World Health Organization estimates that harmful use of alcohol causes each year 2.5 million deaths, and a considerable proportion of them corresponds to young people. The consumption of alcoholic beverages ranks third among the major risk factors for poor health in the world.
A wide variety of alcohol-related problems can have devastating impact on people and their families; In addition, they can seriously affect community life. The harmful use of alcohol is one of the four risk factors for major non-communicable diseases which are susceptible of modification and prevention.
