New Delhi, 6 sep (EFE).-several environmental groups led by Greenpeace today launched in New Delhi, the largest organic “berenjenada” in the world with the intention of raising the Indian authorities about the danger of the use of transgenic.

In a downtown market in Delhi, “chefs” thirty and accompanied by half a hundred supporters chefs prepared hours a “Baingan Bharta” 342,5 kilograms, the largest in the world according to the Limca book of records, the “Indian Guinness”.

Organizers, under the name of safe food Alliance, used this huge Indian traditional dish made from the purple vegetable to direct attention to a draft Bill which the Government intends to regulate the use of the GM.

The above mentioned draft is aimed at creating an authority regulating of the biotechnology of the India (BRAI), something which according to his detractors would consolidate “a system of one-stop shop for the authorisation of GM crops”.

“This is a celebration of the resistance against GM crops.” “Unfortunately, the Government is being on the side of the companies”, he lamented to Efe Rajesh Krishnan, Member of Greenpeace specializing in sustainable agriculture

“Know and healthy cooking healthy, that is what we believe as”chefs”, he stressed for its part Davinder rappelling, President of the Indian culinary Forum, who opted to fight to”ensure a safe food and a sustainable environment”.

The Alliance for the safe food wrote a letter last Friday to the first Indian Minister, Manmohan Singh, which criticized the planned legislation “closes the passage to safety for potentially harmful GM crop assessments”.

In 2008, the India national biodiversity authority gave permission for the cultivation of transgenic, eggplant, but months later the Environment Ministry froze the approval of the sale of the product due to the absence of a consensus on its effects.

In this context, the multinational specialized in GM Monsanto and the Indian company Mahyco – of which the first has 26% of the shares – were reported recently with several universities to develop Eggplant GM without permission.

“Monsanto is a criminal because Governments corrupts and destroys biodiversity.” Monsanto pushed 250,000 Indian farmers to suicide. “That is a crime and genocide”, denounced statements to Efe activist Vandana Shiva.

According to a report by Greenpeace, the Eggplant is the second crop plant peaking in the India and an important source of livelihood of small farmers.

According to this study, more than 10 Indian States, where major crops of Eggplant in the country, have officially rejected the Eggplant GM, as well as thousands of people that have supported requests for environmentalists.

The complainants have it clear: “If the BRAI is ratified in Parliament”, will continue to the transgenic Eggplant “them to GM maize, GM rice, transgenic tomatoes and 40 other foods”. EFE
