When the child picks up and starts to cough, flu is common parents soon offering a cheap product and syrup, of easy access. Cough cured, problem solved. However, what many parents don’t know is the cariogenic potential (factors that lead to caries) syrups.
Helane Glayde
Nayana Souza, recent grads and students of Dentistry of the Centro Universitário do Pará (Cesupa) made the discovery through the Work of course (TC), entitled “evaluation of Cariogenic Potential of Syrups Produced in the Amazon region”, directed by Professor Suelly
Ribeiro.
They found also that the syrups, even being considered herbal medicine, have certain substances that encourage the emergence of cavities, such as sucrose (sugar) and
acidity.
the survey was conducted in the laboratories of the courses of Pharmacy and nutrition of Cesupa and investigated three brands of syrups available on the market: Melkatess, composed of Honey with Mastruz and Milk of Amapá and Fitomelito. The analysis pointed out that the syrup with greater potential to cause corrosion in the enamel of the teeth was composed of Milk and Honey with Mastruz of Amapá, by presenting the honey with higher acidity and less ph. already the Melkatess presented the greatest amount of sucrose and
viscosity.
the more viscous the honey, the more he sticks in tooth structure, which creates the tooth demineralization (loss of minerals from the tooth), and the lower the ph (potential hidrogeniônico that indicates the degree of acidity, neutrality or alkalinity) more susceptible tooth is carious.
To evaluate the quantity of sucrose (sugar), was used the method of determination of moisture by refratometria, in the case of Fitomelito and Melkatess. Already to evaluate the compound Mastruz with honey and Milk of Amapá was used the method of desiccation of the crucible. On the evaluation of ph was chosen by a eletrométrico process, with the use of phmêtro and evaluation of viscosity digital viscometer apparatus was used
.
many people believe that because honey is sweet, it is not acid. However, the honey acid corroe teeth. In the case of children, is more serious still, because they accumulate bacteria that can cause tooth decay and other problems
