Almeria, 2013 February.- El Hospital Vithas Virgen del Mar this year 2013 expands its services and launches rehabilitation and child orthopedics unit. With 800 m2 located in the new building, this service focuses on attention to children (with or without disabilities), in the diagnosis and treatment of Orthopedic abnormalities in well-child visits.
In this unit is also attend the patients in their subsequent recovery process. In fact, the absence of rehabilitation can assume not functional in cases of neurological recovery, not achieve a psychomotor development in cases of children with neurologic disease, joint stiffness or chronic pain, among other pathologies. For this reason, the Vithas Virgen del Mar Hospital reinforces an area that provides greater security to the child and his family, to be able to complete its recovery under the supervision of a team of five physiotherapists and rehabilitation physician with extensive experience.
The rehabilitation of the children
The child Physiatrist is a rehabilitation and physical medicine specialist trained for detection, diagnosis and treatment of the motor impairment disabling, from the birth of the child until the end of their growth. Some of the children’s diseases that can be treated from now on this new service of the almerian hospital are: scoliosis, flat feet, knees, congenital muscular torticollis, infant, metatarsus adductus positional plagiocephaly … among others.
The Vithas Virgen del Mar Hospital performs in this new unit a rigorous process of assessment of children with disabilities which consists of:
-completion of an initial assessment in children diagnosed from a picture specific syndromic (psychomotor retardation, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome(, syndrome Angelman, muscular dystrophy, etc.), and/or neurological risk to determine stage of development in the first months of life and anticipate complications that may arise. The objective of this approach is to teach parents the first measures to take on an outpatient basis as they can be the stimulation (stimulation of the giro, the head, the dump-help control, how to play with them, etc.)
-Prevention of motor fundamental limitations, referred to global, motor and cognitive stimulation of children with problems through the detection, diagnosis and specific and early treatment of illnesses or disabling motor impairment. Once established and valued motor deficits, compensatory measures in the field of orthopedics, adaptation of the environment, incorporating technologies, etc. can be indicated
-To know the natural history of orthopaedic and neuro-motor development to carry out prevention and general and specific treatment of Orthopedic deformities both infant and pre-school and school. This year 2013 hospital will offer new services through the expansion of its facilities, which have involved an investment of 4 million euros. These include maxillofacial surgery and implantology unit and the unit of podiatry. The new 5,000 m2 building increases maternal child and short hospitalization area and average stay, as well as locate the external consultations. From the year 2014 the hospital will perform new investments amounting to 2.5 million euros.
The investments planned for the Virgen del Mar Hospital thus constitute a good example of the commitment of Vithas to improve health benefits for the benefit of the community.
