Port-au-Prince (Reuters) – two effective from Pakistan United Nations peacekeeping were sentenced to a year in prison for raping a 14-year-old Haitian boy, after being found guilty in a Pakistani military trial carried out in Haiti, authorities said Monday.
The spokesman of the UN Sylvie Van Den Wildenberg said that a Pakistani military court judges came to the impoverished Caribbean nation to hold the trial which resulted in the condemnation of the soldiers last week.
Both were found guilty of the violation of the child, which occurred on January 20 in the Northern Gonaives city
Both troops, who were not identified by name, were discharged from the army of summarily and sentenced to a year behind bars in their country of origin, said the UN spokesman.
“The UN was informed last week by Pakistani authorities on the verdict, but the Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) United Nations had no involvement in the military judicial process which was led by the military judges in Pakistan,” he added.
This is the first time that members of the UN military forces deployed in Haiti are tried and sentenced within the borders of the country.
The Mission of UN peacekeepers has faced a problem of ever-increasing in Haiti image, with some of its members accused?responsibility for the introduction of a deadly cholera epidemic in the country hit by an earthquake in 2010.
Several peace troops also have been accused?violation, in addition to the Pakistanis, in cases that have fanned public protests and demands that the members of the UN force be stripped of his immunity and face trial in Haitian courts.
The Minister of Justice of Haiti, Michel Brunache, described the verdict as a “small” step in the right direction in the case of the two Pakistanis.
“We expected more from the UN and the Government of Pakistan, but now I want to concentrate on the appropriate remedy that the victim deserves,” said Brunache.
The Haitian Government authorities did not receive a notice of the military tribunal, the official said.
