Havana, 10 mar ( EFE).-the 14th edition of the “ Marathon of hope Terry Fox” mobilized hundreds of thousands of Cubans in numerous races simultaneous which took place in more than 100 municipalities in the country, reported local media organizers today.
In Havana, the marathon started on the Paseo del Prado and counted with the presence of the Ambassador of Canada in Cuba, Matthew Levin.
“So large, cheerful and supportive participation are proud to all,” said Levin, who believes the race as a symbol of relations between his country and Cuba.
It is estimated that more than two million people have participated in Cuba in the last editions of the marathon, which collects funds for cancer research and is the career of greater call on the island.
Career Terry Fox in Cuba is also considered the second largest of the convened outside of Canada, according to organizers.
Canadian Terry Fox began this kind of racing to promote the fight against cancer after suffering from this disease the amputation of his right leg when he was 18 years old.
In 1980 was proposed to run 42 km daily, for 143 consecutive days with a prosthesis. He died 10 months later.
As usual, this year the race was organized by the Marabana-Maracuba project and in a festive atmosphere brought together participants of all ages, including people with disabilities.
Organizers claim that the proceeds from the event are an “important” and “systematic” contribution to the budget which the Cuban State engaged in basic research against cancer.
2011 Data indicate that the race has raised about $250,000 for that purpose on the island, where that year were conducted seven investigations on cancer.
