WASHINGTON (Reuters) – former Vice President Dick Cheney United States recovers at a hospital in the State of Virginia after having been subjected to a heart transplant on Saturday reported a spokeswoman for Cheney in a message by e-mail.
Cheney, a Republican of 71 years who was Vice-President during the George w. Bush administration, has a long history of heart problems.
Spokeswoman said that Cheney was recovering in the intensive care unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, a suburb of Washington.
The statement argued that Cheney and his family do not know the identity of the donor, but that “they will be forever grateful for this gift that saved a life”.
Cheney, who has suffered five heart attacks, the first when he was 37 years old, underwent surgery in 2010 that it was inserted a device to help his heart.
During his term as Vice President from 2001 to 2009, Cheney handled the power in a way unprecedented and defended a vision of world “go it alone” which infuriated his critics and who pursued him long after leaving public life.
Was a strong supporter of the invasion to Iraq in 2003 and was featured as one of the most renowned officials of the Bush administration which warned about the danger of alleged weapons of mass destruction of Iraq. Such weapons were never found in that country in the middle.
Before becoming Vice President, Cheney served as Defense Secretary in the Government of George H. w. Bush and directed the American military operation to oust Iraqi occupation of Kuwait during the first Gulf war.
Was also a Congressman from the State of Wyoming.
