MadridJanuary of 2013.- stem cell Vidaplus and the Institute of Medicine of Transfusion and Immunology of German Red Cross in Frankfurt will processed and crioconservaran stem cells from bone marrow, adipose tissue and peripheral blood for autologous use (own or any compatible family). This service will be added to the conservation of stem cells from umbilical cord blood Vidaplus provided to Spanish families who wish to maintain ownership over these samples since 2007.
Spanish legislation establishes that the units of umbilical cord blood and other cells and tissues stored in our country are available to any compatible receiver of the network Spanish of donor marrow bone (REDMO). However, in other countries, such as Germany, the legislation allows that the person which have been obtained stem cells can maintain ownership over them and thus be able to use in a possible therapeutic application in the family.
Today, the most common practice is the conservation of stem cells from the blood of the umbilical cord, since, through a simple and painless process, prospective parents claim is to have a few cells one hundred percent compatible with the donor baby and very high probabilities of compatibility with his brothers. Although there is a record of the specimens preserved in private banks, data handling companies dedicated to cryopreservation indicate that they have already exceeded the donated to the public system: 52.377 in late 2011, according to the last annual report of the national transplant organisation (ONT) hematopoietic donation. Although 2012 data has not yet been published, we do know that Spain has become the first country in Europe in units of cord blood stored.
. in the remaining sources, only some Spanish private clinics processed stem cells from adipose tissue, obtained through the technique of liposuction, and no Spanish company preserves samples of bone marrow or peripheral blood for private use. The number of registered Spanish bone marrow donor exceeded 93,000 in late 2011.
