Third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth.
For hundreds of years humans have evolved just as their eating habits, formerly food were harder than the current consistency and facial structure, consequently the structure of the jaw was stronger and larger. In this way found that they had a molar more (fourth molar) of what is now known as third molar (muela trial)
Due to evolution, and processed foods is required less effort to make chewing, reason by which very often remain trapped these third molars or are in a horizontal position and sometimes do not already form.
The average age of formation and growth of the wisdom teeth are around 15 years, so is recommended to assess the position through x-rays and timely detect possible future complications, being adolescence the most appropriate age for such studies and if you see the need to extract them. This procedure should not exceed 10 minutes making it absolutely painless.
Complications by Wisdom teeth (third molars )
The most frequent complications by third molars in bad position are:
(a) destruction by reabsorption of the Molar which is followed by the forehead
(b) formation of cysts and tumors which can cause destruction of the bone of the mandible or maxilla.
(c) food entrapment, which causes (halitosis), bad smell and taste
(d) dental unwanted movements
(e) inflammation of the gums, pain and bleeding
(f) infection of the area with or without the presence of pus.
In persons who perform high impact sports such as: box, karate, foot ball, etc., it is recommended to extract or remove wisdom teeth but not have any complication that increases the possibility of fracture of the angle of the jaw, in case of receiving a blow in the facial area.
Orthodontics (dental brakes) treatments, often require extraction of molars sayings to avoid pressure towards the front cause unwanted movements and/or failures of such orthodontic treatments, there is no special time that can be at the beginning of treatment, during or after depending on preference and indication of the specialist in orthodontics.
Complications within the more aggressive and dangerous is the infection of the area, since that can cause pain and impossibility for chewing, destruction of the bone and invasion to face and neck, and if left unchecked in the short term may jeopardize the ability to breathe for the patient, and in severe cases the patient’s life.
If you detect swelling, pain or inability to open the mouth, seek help to assess the possibility of submitting infections and abscesses cervicofaciales in time.
Over 40 patient has to assess each case with a different approach that if there is no dolor-inflamación or resorption of molar with symptoms can indicate not extract just perform x-rays of control each year.
The surgical procedure to remove a third molar (muela of the trial), it is much easier that regularly are assumed, we currently have anaesthetics and surgical equipment that allows us to carry out in one time not exceeding 10-15 minutes by molar depending on the case, at the end is stitched with absorbable material that disappears from the mouth in a week and a halfthus avoiding the removal of sutures, which is very comfortable for patients who come from distant cities and that it is impossible to go to remove them.
At the hospital Angeles Tijuana have adequate facilities to carry out all kinds of surgeries under regional anesthesia (awake patient) or under general anesthesia-intravenous sedation (asleep), and the most highly qualified team to achieve total satisfaction in all the procedures carried out.
After Mole removal the patient may experience swelling and discomfort which is controlled entirely with medications prescribed in some cases prior to the procedure, such as antibiotics, analgesics-antiinflmatorios and special mouth rinses.
Each patient is different so the ex-ante evaluation and examination (medical history), is required to determine the best treatment, and thus largely reduce the possibility of complications. It is important to mention that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is highly qualified to perform such withdrawals, and provide maximum benefit to our patients.
